History
The site of the Blackwell Chapel Store was originally owned by John D. Blackwell. He operated a government approved still house on this property. He also gave the land for the Blackwell Chapel United Methodist Church and Cemetery.
The Blackwell Chapel Store was built in 1908 by G. W. Herndon and his wife, Senah Blackwell Herndon. They operated the store from 1908 until 1945. In 1945, Fletcher and Lelia Scott Arnett and Robert and Louella Puckett Thompson operated the store jointly from 1945 until 1947. In 1947, Karl and Pearl Helton Hall and William and Virgie Blackwell Crabtree ran the store jointly from 1947 until 1950. In 1950, William and Virgie Crabtree became the sole proprietors until the store closed in 1988. The Blackwells, Herndons and Crabtrees are all members of our family.
At various times over the years, two additional stores were located in the community. One was operated by Jim McNew and the other by John Grady. All three stores carried a wide variety of products including groceries, dry goods and farm and feed supplies. The Crabtree’s also carried gas, oil and kerosene.
In 2021, Steve, Mike and Judy Hoback bought the store and began the journey of bringing this institution back to the Blackwell Chapel community. The current Blackwell Chapel Store offers groceries, dry goods, vendor items and a deli that offers homemade, daily luncheon specials.
Also, throughout the year we offer the occasional concert featuring Old-time or Bluegrass music!
